This position is responsible for providing technology consulting services for Managed IT Services clients. Client consulting will focus on identifying business risk, defining long term IT initiatives & developing a technology budget. The vCIO will act as the central point of contact for maintaining the business relationship. The role is a secondary point of escalation for issues and client concerns. The vCIO is not an account manager, but is responsible for generating non-recurring revenue, agreement renewals & increasing year over year monthly recurring revenue. The vCIO is expected to manage a book of business that consists of 45-64 named or territory accounts up to 100K of monthly recurring revenue.


The vCIO is responsible for transitioning the approved strategy & budget to the account manager for action, as well as updating the IT Strategy, & Documentation upon successful implementation. The account manager/inside sales will be responsible for developing sales quotes & customer follow up. The vCIO is also accountable for Solutions Architect & Account Manager collaboration to ensure best practice standards, and desired long term IT initiatives.

  • Activities
    • Regular planning meetings with assigned accounts. Regularity depends on account size and complexity (bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually)
    • All activities recorded in vCIO playbook.
      • Unique client touches, escalated issues, # of client meetings, tech summaries, budgets completed, and proposals completed.
    • Regular meetings with Network Admin team to review technology alignment
  • Client Business Impact
  • Assess the business impact of the Technical Alignment prepared by the Network Admin team
  • Understand the client's business
  • Prepare recommendations based on technical alignment and identify how misalignments may affect the client’s business
    • Recommendations could include:
      • Projects to implement new technology
      • Simple configuration change
      • Complex configuration change requiring a project
      • Change in how they utilize technology
  • Translate technical conversation into a business conversation 
  • Client Strategy
    • vCIO is responsible for the long term technology strategy for the client
    • vCIO must present this strategy in clear business terms
    • Create a Technology Summary
      • Priority
      • Business Impact
      • Why is this important?
      • Recommendation
      • Summary of lower priority items
      • Utilize the Technology Summary Template
  • The vCIO must show the client the impact of their technology decisions

Skills & Abilities

Education:             Bachelor's Degree (four year college or technical school) Preferred, Field of Study: IT or related technical field.


Experience:           10+ years real world business experience working with clients on IT related matters


Computer Skills:   Familiarity and understanding for key technology solutions. Mainly Microsoft Windows platforms, firewall/security technology, virtualization technologies, switching/routing technologies
