Desktop Engineer

Our client, a large and well established financial institution, is seeking a Desktop Engineer to join their growing team based out of Suffolk, VA. The Client Desktop Engineer is a member of the team that executes software packaging and delivery, security patching and evaluating or designing new products and services affecting end-user systems.  The Client Desktop Engineer also mentors more junior technology members in the pursuit of higher standards of service delivery.Responsibilities for this position would include  designing and administering the end-user computing environment, including operating system, hardware & software for desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.  The design will include standardizing hardware/software, Operating System Image Management, and enforcing these standards across the enterprise.  


  • Engineers and automates the deployment of a secure desktop, laptop and tablet image from a managed test environment to production
  • Management of tablets or mobile devices with a native operating system
  • Implementation of computer hardware standards, software roadmaps, software compatibility, system management tools and security standards
  • Keeps current on emerging desktop technologies and trends and makes recommendations when applicable
  • Delivers and maintains up-to-date documentation on processes and procedures related to end-user computing
  • Participates in the project management, architecture, planning, impact analysis, installation repackaging and execution of hardware and software rollouts and migrations
  • Supports software and desktop infrastructure by troubleshooting systems and applications, training staff and end users, testing software
  • Manages and directs hardware delivery to on and offsite locations
  • Assists with enterprise patching including: standards, package definition, testing, change control and deployment approval
  • Assists in designing and maintaining solutions for disk encryption software
  • Develops and tests platforms and procedures in support of production desktop releases
  • Creates or modifies unattended windows installation process
  • Implements software integration and Patch Management using MSI, SCCM or related software
  • Assists in the technical integration of newly acquired companies into the organization
  • Logs all hours in time tracking system in order to assess workflow process
  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager
  • Obeys all applicable federal laws, rules and regulations relating to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).



  • Professional demeanor

  • Must be flexible with work hours as business needs arise
  • Deep technical understanding of Windows infrastructure services (e.g. AD, GPO, SMB/CIFS) within the enterprise
  • Deep technical understanding of Windows Operating Systems - Windows 7/8.1/10
  • Technical understanding of the Windows Registry
  • Technical understanding of Mac Operating Systems
  • Scripting experience with PowerShell and VBScript
  • Experience with querying and scripting against Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
  • SCCM Application creation and deployment
  • SCCM Package creation and deployment
  • SCCM Software Update deployment
  • Operating System/Image Deployment and Building experience using SCCM, MDT, Ghost or similar technologies
  • Advanced Networking concepts (TCP/IP, Routing)
  • MCSE

Desired Skills and Competencies

  • Certifications desired: A+ and MCP, CCNA, MCSE/MCSA in SCCM
  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Experience with T-SQL and WQL
  • Virtualization - VMWare, VDI, Hyper-V
